 We are in New York City at the Liberty Landing marina.  The first day we were here we were staying at the 79th street boat basin, but there were so many ferries going past that there were constant wakes, so we had to move.  So far we've gone to the museum of Natural History, the USS Intrepid, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 9/11 memorial, High Line Park, and Central Park.  We recently learned that to go to the crown of the Statue of Liberty you need to sign up three months in advance. So going to the crown is off the list.  Today is the 4th full day we've been here.

 At night the skyline and the Statue of Liberty are amazing. It's very hard to get a clear picture of the statue.

Yesterday we took a dinghy ride from Liberty Landing, NJ, to the USS Intrepid in Manhattan.

    How was the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Jack? I know you are an artist so I'm betting you enjoyed it immensely. And look at that armor! You'd have had to be so strong just to carry that around on your body. Yikes!

Another quick update... coming home early

Hello from the Bahamas! As many of you might know, we have decided to cut our trip short and will be back in the USA within a week or so, and back to Wisconsin by May.  We would love to sit out all this chaos on the boat, especially since it provides a natural social barrier, but we don't want to be stranded in a foreign country, and I feel the need to jump back in and help as much as possible. We will have to delay our homecoming party (it was going to be epic) but look forward to seeing some of you in small safe settings.  As soon as we have good data speeds and connectivity, we will do a giant photo update and also write about some of our best and zaniest recent adventures (including shark encounters, sunken planes, and being chased by six police boats at once - yes, six!). quick update

Hello friends and family! As of about one week ago, we have been in the Dominican Republic.  It is a very different world here than Puerto Rico.  It is definitely a developing country, with the predominant mode of transportation being motorcycles, no chain supermarkets, just "colmados" by the side of the road, and cheap but incredibly tasty chicken/beans/rice for sale at small nameless stands everywhere.  We did an overnight passage as a family to get here - Jack is writing a post about that so more later. While sailing here, the DR government is very strict about where we can go.  But for the last two days, we were at Haitises national Park.  This is perhaps the most spectacular place we have been to so far.  It is rumored to be where Jurassic Park was filmed.  There is a huge cave system there, and we visited three of them.  Absolutely breathtaking. We basically have little to no phone, and very little internet here.  Email remains the best...

the Worst day of the year by Jack

posted by Jack The worst day we've had so far was December 26th, 2019. We were going back to the Virgin Islands, it was a rather rainy day when we set off. The waves were steep and close together. The only good thing about that day was that a third of the way to St. Thomas we had a very strong bite on the fishing pole. It turned out to be a huge dolphin fish; it was so big we were worried that it was going to break the pole. It was putting up a huge fight and the line was starting to chafe through. We reeled it in to about fifteen feet behind the boat when it started to really fight again. It went under and it must have ripped its jaw or lip because it came off the hook. The rest of the way to St. Thomas still had pretty bad waves. We made a pit stop in Charlotte Amalie and continued on to St. John. It started to rain and the chop got worse.
